Our first trip was to Monache Meadows in the Golden Trout Wilderness. It's the largest meadow in the sierras and has a beautiful (fish-filled) river running through it. The previous week the temperatures were in the 80's. On the map the meadow was an "easy" 10 miles.
We camped at the trailhead the night before and the temperature dropped to the 30's and it began to rain. But we weren't about to let that stop us.
We didn't think it could rain all day, and it didn't, it started snowing and the temps dropped even lower. On top of that it turned out to be around 14 miles to the meadow. Here's Venessa "smiling" at the approaching snow storm.
Even though the temperature never topped 40 and I only caught one fish in the swollen river, we still found a beautiful camp site and had a good time.
Seville Lake
Our next trip was with our friends Kim and Matt to a beautiful lake in Kings Canyon National Park that was a much more doable 6 miles. We had to do some route finding over the snowy pass, but the lake was beautiful and the temperature was nice.
But the most important thing (to me) was that the fishing was awesome. I caught over 70 and Venessa, who didn't spend every waking moment fishing, caught her personal best - 9 fish. They were tasty, too.
George Lake
Over the 4th of July we took advantage of the 3 days we had off of work and headed for the Kaiser Wilderness. Nessa's belly is starting to get pretty big so this will be her last trip of the season. We took it easy and only hiked about 4.5 miles.
The mosquitoes were fierce at times and the fish scoffed at our lures, but it was beautiful and relaxing anyway. I did manage to catch a couple of monster brook trout using cheese slices for bait.
I also hiked up to some smaller lakes and found tiny trout that bit everything I threw in the water. On top of that the views were gorgeous. Meanwhile, Venessa relaxed at our beautiful, secluded campsite by George lake.
