Baby's 1st Campout

So, we took courage from the Cox's baby campout success and finally decided to venture back into the wild for a car camp with baby Jeremy. Of course, it was drizzly and cool after a week of sunshine and 80 deg near record-breaking highs. We arrived at Gordon Gulch campground at about 7 and promptly propped Jeremy up in his back carrier so he could watch us set up camp.




He was having a blast hanging out with us by the fire (which he has apparently been genetically predisposed to being mesmerized by) and lounging in the tent...


but alas, it was soon time for him to head to bed.

Here begins the drama. Our little angel, while perfect in every other way, does not sleep when he can see any light whatsoever. Seriously, he sleeps in a pack-n-play in the closet during his naps, and his room has been outlined with extra curtains and tin-foiled windows for nighttime sleeping. Plus, it was awfully crisp (30s by early morning), so for light and warmth control Mommy and Son were to sleep in the back of the Highlander while Daddy manned the tent. Thus, down went Baby at 8 or so (way past his bedtime) and he fussed for a long while, and Ryan and I ate fire roasted hot dogs and marshmallows. I headed to 'bed' at ~10, and the baby talk-cried in my face the entire night. He was so upset to be outside of his comfortable, safe, and well-known surroundings. It was both pathetic and endearing, though oh, so frustrating! He and I were so exhausted by the morning (which began at 5 when the sky began to lighten ever so slightly) that we skipped the Sugar Mountain hike and headed home early. We did hang out around the fire that morning, but we were still able to play with the fire, eat, pack up, and head out by 7:25.

It was a super fun trip in a lot of respects. The rain held off, there was no wind, and hanging out with Jer before he went down and with Ryan after he went down were all awesome. Plus, we had a secluded campsite so we didn't have to worry about Jeremy bothering our neighbors. The morning was reasonably warm, and the drive home was beautiful! All in all, a good first campout. Jeremy definitely likes the sights and sounds of the outdoors, but I'll have to recover from sleep deprivation before we try this again. :-) No worries, we'll make an outdoorsman out of him yet!
