Yesterday I passed my comprehensive exam - an hour-long presentation and defense before my doctoral committee on my proposed dissertation research. My title was "Endgame strategies for planetary moon orbiters." Basically that means designing orbits and trajectories for sending a spacecraft to the moons of Jupiter or Saturn. You know - "rocket science". My aggressive research timeline calls for my to graduate by next August. Cross your fingers...
To celebrate my doctoral candidacy and the beautiful weather we went on a hike. It was only 4 miles but it was nice to get out again. Now that Jeremy is huge and a sitting master he has finally graduated to the baby carrier backpack:

The weather was perfect and Jeremy was enthralled with his new vantage point.

It's much easier to carry him on my back that in his front carrier, but combined with the backpack weight he's heavier than my fully-loaded backpack for a 3-day trip. And my sleeping bag doesn't shift its weight around when it gets grumpy.

In the past week or so Jeremy has really developed his skills. He can stand by himself holding on the the crib,

he sits fully upright for as long as he wants,

he rolls over both ways, and he pushes himself up to hands and knees, rocks back and forth, then scoots backward. We're all enjoying his new found mobility. Isn't he adorable:
